If your answer is a resounding "Yes!" an internship at PEM is the perfect fit. PEM offers the chance to work side by side with professionals in diverse fields and make valuable contacts within the museum world. Be ready to bring ideas to the table, set goals and accomplish meaningful projects. You might shoot and produce a video for integrated media, write a marketing plan, coordinate a wedding or build part of an exhibition. Interns learn invaluable professional and time-management skills. Plus, a museum is an exciting and creative place to work! Volunteer internships are available with flexible hours in a range of departments. The program also includes Q&A sessions with staff and fellow interns that might focus on behind-the-scenes operations, current exhibitions and how to get a job.

  • Art & Nature Center Intern/Art & Nature CenterOpen or Close

    Join the Art & Nature Center (ANC) as an intern. You'll greet and help visitors in the newly renovated ANC and monitor how families interact with exhibits. You'll help maintain exhibits, teach interactive programs and family workshops, facilitate the weekly Art Cart program in other PEM galleries, and develop art activities. You'll research varied topics while working on independent projects, supporting exhibition evaluation, curriculum development, generating public programming ideas and exploring future ANC exhibition topics. Administrative tasks include copying, preparing for programs, preparing mailings and organizing supplies.

    Internship Qualifications: College or graduate student. Some customer service or education experience is preferred but not required. You should have a friendly, personable manner, strong communication skills and a passion for working with children and families and be comfortable interacting with the public. Ideal for students interested in museum education. Ability to stand and lift moderately heavy objects helpful.

  • Registration Intern/Collection Services DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Registration team as an intern. You will discover the secret, fast-paced, behind-the-scenes workings of an art museum by assisting in the daily duties of the Registration Department. You will assist in the preparation of documentation for changing exhibitions, outgoing loans and PEM's permanent collection; digitize collection records, including scanning, image manipulation, file re-naming and organization; data entry of object and accession records on the Argus Software database system; archive files, including surveying, organizing and archiving files under the instruction of the entire Registration Department; research projects pertaining to donors, loans and object records as they arise; train in object handling, object moves and the creation of condition reports; and participate in ongoing collection digitization projects.

    Internship Qualifications: College student with knowledge of and an appreciation for art/art history and a demonstrated ability in paying attention to details. Ability to work well with staff throughout PEM is essential.

  • Design Intern/Creative Services DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Creative Services team as a design intern. If you are nearing completion of a graphics art degree and would like to gain significant workplace experience before graduation, this is the ideal internship for you. You'll produce a wide range of printed materials including signs, brochures, fliers and postcards and help solve design and construction problems related to museum signage, packaging, etc. Interns will learn to take a job from conception through printing (including press checks).

    Internship Qualifications: College student and skilled designer, proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, who can work independently and with a team. You must also have good writing skills and be interested in working in an arts/nonprofit environment. The ability to work well with staff throughout the organization is essential.

  • Editorial Intern/Creative Services DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Creative Services team as an editorial intern. You'll work with the Editor to copy edit articles, invitations, exhibition materials, ads, promotions, the members' magazine, Web and more. You'll also have opportunities to write short articles for the magazine and PEM blog. This is a great chance to learn how to edit for clarity and style. You'll also generate a clip or two for your portfolio that create buzz for upcoming exhibitions and events.

    Internship Qualifications: College student with knowledge of and an appreciation for art, excellent copy editing skills and familiarity with AP style plus proven writing and reporting abilities. Must work well with staff throughout the organization.

  • Photo Intern/Creative Services DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join our photography team as photo intern and flex your photo assisting and post-production skills. Work alongside the PEM photographers during their both public and behind-the-scenes digital photography of programs, exhibitions and amazing works of art and culture. Learn advanced digital imaging techniques and help manage our digital assets in a creative, lively production environment.

    Internship Qualifications: College student with demonstrable proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, 1-2 years experience/classes in photography, familiarity with DSLRs, Mac OS, and comfortable working with the public.

  • Development Intern/Development DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Development team as an intern. You'll assist in all aspects of the Peabody Essex Museum's fundraising operations. Responsibilities include providing administrative support to Development department as needed, writing materials for donor cultivation and stewardship, assisting with specific research and data gathering projects, supporting gift acknowledgement and fulfillment activities and assisting in planning and execution of special member events. Interns will also contribute to maintenance of accurate Raiser's Edge donor database by gathering and updating of contact information and relationships.

    Internship Qualifications: College or postgraduate student with excellent written and oral communication, planning and organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and precise attention to detail are required. Must be computer literate and have knowledge of and ease with Microsoft Office. Must effectively interact with members of the Development staff, as well as other museum departments. Experience conducting online research preferred.   • Development Events Intern/Development DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Development team as an events intern. Assist the Manager of Development Events in the successful planning, organizing and execution of cultivation, stewardship and fundraising events, including the Annual Gala; assist with events planned by the Museum Director's office, Curatorial, and Marketing departments. The intern also helps coordinate audio visual, photography and print material requests for events, mailings for invitations, appeals, gift acknowledgments, and follow-up letters; prepares, proofreads and edits correspondence; tracks event RSVPs, guest lists and seating assignments and assists with other data entry activities in development database and provides additional support for some weekend and evening events. This is a great opportunity to work with the Manager of Development and learn more about select aspects of planning for events such as PEM's annual Gala.

    Internship Qualifications: Computer skills (especially Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other standard office programs); knowledge of EventPro and Raiser's Edge software a plus; excellent telephone, writing, and interpersonal skills; previous administrative or office support experience preferred, development and/or event planning desirable.

    The intern should have the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize and take individual initiative. We are looking for a personable, high energy, flexible and team-oriented intern. The intern should also have excellent communications skill and will work with donors, volunteers and external event vendors for Development Fundraising events and Gala.

  • Adult Public Programs Intern/Education DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Education Department for Fall 2013. You'll work with the adult programs staff to research a wide variety of presenters for our programs including visual artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians, art and history experts, etc. You'll also help create and implement interactive art activities for adults that will be offered at our PEM/PM: Evening Party series. Administrative tasks include organizing evaluation binders, finding supplies on-line, preparing sample art activities.

    Internship Qualifications: College or graduate student who is knowledgeable about art and art making and enjoys working with adults and families. Academic concentration in Education, Studio Art, Art History or Museum Studies preferred. You will need strong organizational skills, computer skills and the ability to work collaboratively or independently and multitask. You should be comfortable speaking in front of groups and have excellent communication skills.

  • Family Programs Intern/Education DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Education team as the Family Programs Intern. You will assist in the research, planning, and implementation of a variety of programs for family audiences. This will include researching future partnerships with artists and performers, preparing supplies, assisting at large events, as well as other regular administrative tasks.

    Internship Qualifications: Graduate student or advanced undergraduate who is pursuing a career in Art Education, Museum Studies, or Early Childhood Education. Basic knowledge of art materials and studio practices preferred. Must have strong research, organizational, and computer skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and be comfortable working with people of all ages.

  • Executive Office Intern/Executive OfficeOpen or Close

    Join the Executive Office as an intern. Assist with the administrative, clerical and special projects duties as directed by the Executive Assistant to the Director and CEO. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about high-level administrative support and operation of one of the nation's top museums. Responsibilities include maintaining and setting up of filing systems, preparing correspondence, photocopying, calendar management, data entry, telephone inquiries and transcription, greeting visitors, Trustees and Overseers, VIP Guests and donors. Assist with meeting and special event set-up and messengering.

    Internship Qualifications: Familiarity with Office Suite applications with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, excellent oral and written communication skills. The intern must have the ability to handle confidential matters in a highly professional and service-oriented environment as well as a professional phone manner and appearance. The intern should also have the desire and ability to work and thrive as part of a team and/or independently. In addition, accuracy, attention to detail, reliability and flexibility are essential.

You'll be an ambassador for the museum working in the Information and Special Exhibition areas to welcome guests and inform them about our programs and exhibitions. You may also learn how to sell museum admission at the admissions desk and assist current and new members at the membership desk. Other responsibilities within the department include administrative support and general customer service for museum guests, members and staff. You'll learn customer service skills by interacting with the public, sharing information and helping ensure a pleasant experience for our guests.

    Internship Qualifications: High school or college student. Some customer service experience is preferred but not essential. You should have a friendly, personable manner and be comfortable interacting with the public. Must be available two to three days a week including weekends. Cash-handling experience a plus.

  • Guest Services Group Tour Intern/Guest Services DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Guest Services team as Group Tour intern. You'll be an ambassador for the museum checking in group tours. The Group Tour intern will greet group leaders and participants, orient groups to the museum campus, collect fees and provide admissions stickers and floor plans. Other group tour responsibilities include assisting the Reservation Coordinator with the administrative tasks in processing group reservations including, but not limited to, entering group reservation information into the system, copying and filing group reservation forms and preparing weekly sheets for Education Groups drop-off areas. You may also learn how to sell museum admission at the Admissions Desk and work at the Information Desk and Special Exhibition areas to inform guests about our programs and exhibitions as well as greet our guests as they enter the museum. Other responsibilities within the department include administrative support and general customer service for museum guests, members and staff.   • Integrated Media Intern/Integrated Media DepartmentOpen or Close

    Join the Integrated Media team as an intern. This internship is a hands-on learning experience geared towards college students completing a Museum Studies or related degree program who want to see how digital media integrate into the exhibition development process. You'll collaborate in the creative and technical aspects of making digital media pieces, you'll interface with other departments, and assist in keeping multiple IM projects on track. You might even blog about your work at PEM.

    Internship Qualifications: College student with a solid understanding of museums, and basic familiarity with web protocols, social media platforms, Google apps, and Microsoft Office. The intern must possess strong organization and communication skills and be able to manage multiple priorities. Programming or filmmaking experience a plus, but not necessary.

  • FELLOWSHIPS

    PEM offers summer fellowship opportunities for graduate students and cultural professionals of Native American, Native Hawaiian or Alaska Native background. These paid, full-time, 10-week fellowships are designed to prepare participants for management positions in the museum field and/or the nonprofit cultural sector. The program presents a comprehensive perspective on the theory and practice of museum leadership, in the context of an in-depth project within a department of the museum. Lodging, travel expenses and stipend are included. School credit is available with an official request.

  • Cultural Education FellowOpen or Close

    Fellowship Goals: The Fellow will develop reference materials for teachers (and other audiences) that offer guidance in creating culturally sensitive art activities inspired by culturally specific works of art — including, but not limited to, Native American art. This project will enable PEM to be a vital resource for teaching and learning about global art and culture in a meaningful, respectful way.

    The document produced through this fellowship will provide a tool that PEM education staff – and teachers in PEM's network – can refer to and share with other teachers developing activities with cultural resonance.

    Responsibilities and Tasks: Review literature on best practices related to cultural education; produce a summary of findings.

    Conduct research on respectful art making, including interviewing teachers and consulting with colleagues at other museums and with individuals of relevant cultural backgrounds.

    Develop a written resource with guidelines pertaining to art making inspired by Native American art and art of at least one other cultural/geographical group. Through this model, lay the groundwork so that guidelines pertaining to other cultures can be added in the future.

    Present and discuss the guidelines at a workshop for teachers.

    Training and Supervision: The fellowship will include training in strategies for teaching with objects and teaching with, through and about art, as well as opportunities for collaboration with other members of the Education Department team.

    The Fellow will also learn about historic and contemporary artwork in the PEM collection.

    The Fellow will be supervised by the Student and Teacher Programs Manager, and will also work closely with the Youth Programs Coordinator and School Programs Coordinator.

    In addition, the Fellow will have the opportunity to meet with members of the curatorial staff regarding PEM collection areas.

    Preferred Skills: The successful applicant will be a creative and strategic thinker with expertise in cultural education and a passion for the arts. Experience working with educators and/or students required; art education experience preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Internet research required.

  • Facilities FellowOpen or Close

    Fellowship Goals: As part of a major museum construction project, the Fellow will undertake a survey of new equipment being installed in the Peabody Essex Museum for handling all systems of a new building. The Fellow will need to learn museum operating standards for each system. He/she will create a database of the new equipment for reference by Facilities Department and write and deliver a training presentation in use of the database for relevant staff members.

    Responsibilities and Tasks: Data collection of new museum building infrastructure systems installed as part of the museum expansion, including categorizing and inventorying all equipment.

    Review and abstract Operation and Maintenance manuals to create a preventive maintenance database for new building systems.

    Conduct field verifications of equipment and document equipment with photographs downloaded into database program.

    Training and Supervision: Fellow will report to the Facility Operations Manager. Will also be working with members of the Project Team including Director of Facilities, General Contractor and the PEM Project Manager. Training on database system and building systems.

    Preferred Skills: Detail oriented, knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with database programs. Interest in building systems with emphasis on systems specific to museum and curatorial spaces.

  • Curatorial Fellow in Native American Art and CultureOpen or Close

    Fellowship Goals: The Fellow will gain experience in the principle aspects of curatorial practice in the arena of Native American art and culture, including the process of developing exhibitions and Web-based outreach tools. In addition the Fellow will become familiar with Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) protocols, and will engage productively with indigenous communities, gathering information on objects and artists.

    Responsibilities and Tasks: Assist with researching forthcoming exhibition concepts and objects for the re-installation of PEM's collection and/or a future traveling exhibition.

    Conduct ongoing NAGPRA research and outreach.

    Assist with object and artist biographical research, and additional data enhancement such as provenance, bibliographic references and exhibition and publication histories for PEM's online collection access portal.

    Provide daily support to Curator, assisting with department activities including hosting delegations of visiting scholars, artists and/or indigenous community representatives, and other duties as assigned.

    Training and Supervision: The Curator of Native American Art and Culture will be the primary supervisor for the Fellow. Other specialists may provide training or project-based supervision as necessary.

    Training will be provided as necessary in PEM's Web content management system, object provenance, object handling and concept development and presentation.

    A Human Resources representative and the Native American Fellowship program manager will provide additional support and training through an initial orientation session, and ongoing goal setting and review as needed.

    Preferred Skills: Important skills include: Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel; excellent written and oral communication; general research experience in the area of art and culture; familiarity with museum presentations of Native art and culture, and curatorial concepts and process.

    Thoroughness, attention to detail, creativity, willingness to try new things, ability to work independently and flexibility.

    Familiarity and comfort with Web-based research and applications.

  • Exhibition Design FellowOpen or Close

    Fellowship Goals: To engage in a creative process of conceptualizing, visualizing and implementing museum exhibitions for PEM's changing exhibition program. This work will reinforce several key institutional objectives:

    • Redefining design delivery to more effectively engage visitors with objects and culture
    • Experimenting with techniques to broaden an appreciation of and engagement with the artistic process, empowering visi tors to self-curate and discover new relationships between objects and ideas.
    • To stimulate and heighten an awareness of creativity and cultural diversity and its meaning, to be shared by all visitors.

    We are seeking a candidate who can bring initiative, analytical skills and an inquisitive spirit to our interpretive design process.

    Responsibilities and Tasks:
    Ideations:
    creating inspiration or idea visual presentations to inform design and interpretive thinking.

    Design studies: creating alternate approaches to communication arts and three-dimensional elements.

    Installation assist: working with Exhibition Design staff on testing and implementation.

    Training and Supervision: The candidate will be asked to pursue independent development of ideas and research for presentation to fellow Exhibition Design Department staff as well as representing the department with other museum and project participants.

    Supervision will be through the Exhibition Design Manager, with varying levels of instruction and interaction by all Exhibition Design Department staff. The Fellow will be oriented and instructed on graphic output and exhibition production standards, as well as presentation techniques needed to communicate with other PEM departments involved in the design planning process.

    Preferred Skills: The ideal candidate will have knowledge and basic skills in computer programs for documentation and research, presentation and basic 2-D or 3-D design.

    Fellow should have some experience with Adobe suite of programs, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. Working experience with Microsoft Word and Excel are also desirable.

    CAD experience in VectorWorks or SketchUp is preferred, but not required.
