A Recent Acquisition of South Indian Religious Sculpture at PEM
In 2006 the Peabody Essex Museum acquired a group of 105 copper-alloy religious images from the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra in India. The images, dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries, were all made for use in Hindu rituals.
Dr. Leo Figiel, a well known collector of Indian vernacular art, collected these works over a thirty year period, finding choice examples with dealers and collectors in India, the U.S. and Europe.
A selection from the collection is on display in the museum’s Fadia-Deshpande Gallery of Traditional Art from India.
