Research Services

Visiting Researchers

Approved Visiting Researchers may access Phillips Library materials during nonpublic hours by making an appointment for a mutually agreeable time. Approved Visiting Researchers may, of course, visit the library during regular public hours, as well. Those wishing to be considered for Visiting Researcher status must complete a Visiting Researcher Application form and submit it by mail or fax:

Mail
: Head of Research Services, Phillips Library, Peabody Essex Museum
161 Essex Street, Salem, MA 01970

Fax: 978-741-9012

Visiting Researcher status is granted for a specified duration based on information supplied in the application and generally does not exceed one year. Applications are reviewed by committee and decisions made within approximately two weeks. Requests for renewal of Visiting Researcher status will be considered.

Approved Visiting Researchers pay a daily fee to use the library [see Hours & Information] unless they are members of the Peabody Essex Museum. Please note that the library is not open on Friday or the weekend.

Reference Questions

Reference librarians will respond to brief, specific questions about Phillips Library holdings, for example, “do you have the book, Salem Vessels and Their Voyages, in your collection?” There is no charge for this service.

Research Procedures

While we encourage patrons to visit our library to conduct their own research, we understand it is not always possible. For a pre-paid fee, reference department staff will search Phillips Library print, microfilm, and manuscript collections and respond to your inquiry. Please understand that we cannot guarantee results, but every effort will be made to assist you, and we will document all sources that we consult during the course of our research. Up to twenty (20) photocopied pages of source material and shipping fees are included in the research fee.

Research requests may be made in writing by conventional mail or email and must be accompanied by a nonrefundable fee of $25.00 for non-members or $20.00 for members for up to one hour’s research. Please allow four to six weeks for a response to your request from the time of its receipt. Requests are handled in the order in which they are received. *Research Request Form [PDF Format].

Probate Records

The Phillips Library holds microfilm of Essex County probate records for the years 1638 through 1914. Researchers may visit the library at no cost to personally review this microfilm. Alternatively Phillips Library staff may research names you provide. A search is limited to three names at the research rate of $25.00 for non-members, $20.00 for members. *Research Request Form [PDF Format].

Photocopy Request

Requests for photocopies from specific books or periodicals, accompanied by a full citation (author, title, place and date of publication, manuscript collection number, journal title), are subject to photocopy costs and shipping fees only. The cost for photocopies is $ .50 per page; shipping costs are $5.00 for up to 30 pages. *Research Request Form [PDF Format].
