Tracing a Line

 Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 8pm

 Location: Atrium

Tracing a Line follows a single melody - from Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 60 - as it is reimagined across the centuries. The Encounters Ensemble orchestra performs selections from Johann Rudolph Ahle's four-part folk chorale, Alban Berg's violin concerto "To the memory of an angel," Samuel Beckett's short play Nacht und Träume and a new orchestra piece composed by Matthew Aucoin, conductor, poet and creator of this special program. Tracing a Line incorporates elements of theater, architecture, visual art and instrumental and vocal music from the 17th through the 21st centuries to create a new work of art at PEM. Combining literary, theatrical, choral and orchestral elements, Tracing a Line seeks to upend classical music performance conventions and provide a platform for direct interface between artist and audience. This singular performance, conceived by PEM's new Composer-in-Residence Matt Aucoin and his two collaborators Victoria Crutchfield (director) and Keir GoGwilt (first violinist), follows a single melody through time.

Aucoin, PEM's Composer-in-Residence, is a 2012 graduate of Harvard College and an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera. His next opera is being commissioned by the American Repertory Theater. Another performance from Aucoin is scheduled for PEM in the fall.

Doors Open at 7:30pm

1 pm | In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter

2011, 75 minutes, directed by Tomas Leach

Director Tomas Leach is expected to attend this Massachusetts premiere

Saul Leiter could have been lauded as the great pioneer of color photography, but was never driven by the allure of success. Instead he preferred to drink coffee and photograph in his own way, amassing an archive of beautiful work that is now piled high in his New York apartment. An intimate and personal film, In No Great Hurry follows Leiter as he deals with the triple burden of clearing an apartment full of memories, becoming world famous in his 80s and fending off a pesky filmmaker.

Tickets available at the door. First come, first served

3:30 pm | The World's Most Fashionable Prison

2012, 67 minutes, directed by CK Mak, English subtitles

Among toughened criminals on the gang-run blocks of a maximum security facility in the Philippines, we meet a community of inmates taking part in an extraordinary project. Fashion designer Puey Quinones visits once a week to teach 30 participants how to sew, work with fabrics and see their ideas go from sketch to finished product. The teams' efforts culminate in a competitive sartorial showdown judged by top professionals from the Philippine fashion industry.

Tickets available at the door. First come, first served

5:30 pm | The World Before Her

2012, 90 minutes, written and directed by Nisha Pahuja

In the lobby of a Bombay hotel, we meet 20 young Indian women who arrive for a monthlong beauty boot camp. These Miss India pageant contestants know winning means instant stardom. But as the popularity of pageants has exploded, so have the controversies surrounding them. We also visit a camp for girls run by the women's wing of the militant fundamentalist movement. Through lectures and physical combat training, they learn what it means to be good Hindu women. These young women may represent opposing extremes but share a common dream: to help shape the future of India.

Tickets available at the door. First come, first served

7:30 pm | Poetry of Resilience

2011, 40 minutes, directed by Katja Esson, English subtitles

With grace and humor, Poetry of Resilience follows six poets who survived some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century, exploring language as an internal means of survival - for the poet and the readers of poems.

Tickets available at the door. First come, first served

The festival kicks off with a world premiere that tells the story of a secret U.S. Army unit during World War II, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, or so-called Ghost Army. From June 1944 to March 1945, 1,100 American GIs used inflatable rubber tanks and planes, sound effects and other trickery to mislead the Germans.
