It sometimes feels like watching a fashion show just sitting in a downtown Salem café and watching all the stylish locals stroll by. Salem is a city that celebrates self-expression, and you can see it on the streets.
I am lucky to have the most distracting spot in the Salem Main Streets office (right by the window). As I am writing this, I spot someone in a crimson flowing skirt, bat-wing backpack and beribboned green bob haircut slip into Silly Bunny Toys across the street. Another person with pink eyeglasses, a pink coat and a floral shift dress bustles by. I get lots of enjoyment from being surrounded by these bold style choices, especially as we are achingly close to spring. My eyes are desperate for color in the absence of leaves and blooms.
I’m particularly aware of wardrobe choices because the Salem Main Streets Fashion Show is almost here! Thanks to the generosity of our neighborhood art museum, PEM’s Main Atrium will become a showcase for downtown Salem’s boutiques and small businesses.
This year’s fashion show presents a new creative challenge: crafting a look inspired by something on view in the museum. This idea was introduced by Petra Slinkard, PEM’s Director of Curatorial Affairs and The Nancy B. Putnam Curator of Fashion and Textiles. To get started, Petra offered to personally guide participating boutique owners and managers through PEM’s Fashion and Design gallery for a creative jump start.

It isn’t easy to get a group of small business owners away from their storefronts on a weekend, but it turns out that many people couldn’t resist the invitation for inspiration and a rare opportunity to socialize with their fellow retail warriors. Petra’s insights on the collection and personal storytelling left our group abuzz. Afterwards, we took turns calling dibs on pieces to reference in our outfits.

I caught Amber and Laurie from Die With Your Boots On and The Ossuary gravitating to Shakuntala Kulkarni's armor in Powerful Figures. Ben and Alexis from Vampfangs and Velvet & Vein were shooting love darts at a shoe with a giant fish hook for a heel by Thom Solo. Nick and Jillian from Emporium32 and 1925 at the Hawthorne Hotel took photos of Yolanda Cellucci’s fur-collared and sparkle-bedecked cocktail dress for a potential nod on the runway. I suspect Mandy from Modern Millie may create a look with colorful textured knits inspired by Nick Cave’s Soundsuit. Linda Mullen of Grace & Diggs has already started sketching a headpiece based off of a collapsible crinoline creation. Evan from Pub & Cloth and Stephanie from Salem Bespoke Boutique are glad there is enough Iris Apfel for the both of them.
I am eagerly anticipating the results of this fashion field trip. While I will not be walking the runway, I can’t resist a challenge! I have a colorful and eclectic closet and I’m not afraid to use it. The first outfit I put together is obviously Iris: Big round glasses paired with a scarlet velvet suit based on her wrap coat and stockings of the same color. Her accent color was turquoise, but I chose yellow to go with the Iris-style eyeglasses. My patterned scarf plays off her patterned shoes.

I also wanted to try something from Yolanda’s wardrobe and selected a skirt suit by Oscar De La Renta. Yolanda is a maximalist, so instead of just one look, I assembled a week’s worth of black/white/magenta/yellow/and blue outfits based on the suit colors and did not hold back on elements that are beyond my everyday accessorizing, like faux fur, shiny satin and velvet gloves. I admit that I lost points for a serious lack of Yolanda-style sequins.

I may even look beyond the Fashion and Design gallery for my PEM outfit scouting. I do enjoy a puffy sleeve like the Flemish fellas are sporting in Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools: 300 Years of Flemish Masterworks. I can’t wait to see what local fashion will be coming down the runway and visible on the guests turning out to support their Salem neighbors. Hope to see you on April 2! I’ll be the one dressed like a fashionable narwhal.
Salem Main Streets' biggest fundraiser returns on April 2 from 6:30–9 pm! Come celebrate the breadth of creativity and fashion available in our amazing downtown. In addition to partnering sponsor Peabody Essex Museum, this event is generously sponsored by lead sponsor DJQ Media and supporting sponsors Modern Millie and COVEN. All funds raised support the year-round work of Salem Main Streets, a 501c3 nonprofit on a mission to support the continued revitalization of downtown Salem. SMS provides direct and indirect business support, coordinates multiple community events (like the Salem Farmers' Market, Salem Arts Festival, and Salem's So Sweet), and partners on numerous community initiatives like promoting local businesses, engaging our residents, and attracting visitors.
