Traditionally buntings are colorful flags made of fabric (also known as tammy) which are linked together along a string. Buntings have been around since the 1600s, used on ships as a means of communication. Since then, they’ve been a popular decoration for events seen throughout history during the end of wars, marriages, and many national holidays. Although buntings have a long history they have recently resurfaced thanks to their festive, bright appearance. In the spirit of festivity this activity is meant to lift up and serve as a voice for LGBTQ+ people during Pride Month. What about yourself do you want to celebrate? Create a bunting of your own in this simple, customizable activity for all ages.
Supplies
- Thick string or twine
- Colored and patterned paper
- Scissors
- Tape
- Marker
- Pencil
Instructions
Step 1: Cut a long piece of string. Tape each end of the string to a wall or the side of a flat surface.
Step 2: Use one piece of paper to create a triangle stencil. This will ensure all your flags are the same shape and size. To do this, draw a long acute triangle and cut it out.
Step 3: Trace the triangle stencil onto the other pieces of paper. You want enough triangles to fill the length of the string.
Step 4: Use a marker and write down something you’re most proud of about yourself. Write each letter onto a different triangle flag.
Step 5: Fold the longest side of the triangle down over the string, and tape the backside down. This fold should only be about half an inch. Trim the sides to make it even.
Step 6: Repeat step 5 till you run out of triangle flags or room on the string. Now you’ve successfully assembled your own Pride Bunting!
