      Chinese Art

PEM’s Chinese collection celebrates the breadth and beauty of China’s diverse arts.

      Chinese Art

PEM’s Chinese art collection, the oldest in the United States, represents a rare and outstanding breadth of arts and objects of daily life from China.

The collection began when Salem merchants first made contact with China, with the earliest objects received shortly after the East India Marine Society was founded in 1799.

Notable holdings include textiles, ceramics, decorative arts, prints, calligraphy, sculptures and paintings, including two imperial portraits. The collection also includes examples of contemporary Chinese art that draws on American and European cultures. A notable array of Chinese textiles emphasizes the importance of silk, both for international trade and within Chinese society, from Qing dynasty court robes to qipao (or cheongsam, a type of dress) illustrating urban Chinese women’s fashions from the 1920s through the 1940s.

PEM is also the home of Yin Yu Tang, a 220-year old Qing dynasty merchant’s home from Anhui Province that was disassembled and re-erected in Salem in 2003. Yin Yu Tang — translated as “Hall of Plentiful Shelter” — was home to the Huang family for eight generations. The home reveals the Huizhou region’s unique architectural style as well as diverse cultural changes that occurred in China throughout the home’s occupancy. Stepping inside reveals a new way for museum visitors to appreciate Chinese art and culture spanning from around 1800 to the 1980s.
